Whale Trail Local Art In Bourne

Whale Trail Local Art In Bourne

Whale Trail Local Art In Bourne

This Whale was created as part of the “Whale Trail” project of Cape Cod in 2001.  The Buzzards Bay Village Association under the direction of Fundraiser D. Flynn joined a group of 55 others to sport light non-profits on Cape Cod.  This Whale was developed in a scrimshaw fashion to speak to the historic maritime past in Bourne.  There were 12 maritime families in Bourne very instrumental in the growth of this town, with the nautical flags of each family shown on the whale.  The New World’s first location of trade, the Aptucxet Trading Post is incorporated on the whale with the Joseph Jefferson Wind Mill, lighthouses, sea life and much more. Ernie Ford and daughter Danielle  created this masterpiece.

History of Bournedale Village Inn

History of Bournedale Village Inn

Mr. Paul Marchand bought the property in 1945.  Mr. Marchand was a Merchant Marine and lived and worked in New York.   He decided to build the Motel after he visited the first “motel “in the United States located on Stanton Island.  Mr. Marchand and his son build the motel in 1950 and named it “The Bournedale Lodge” it is said to be the “first motel” on Cape Cod.  The buildings that exist today are very different than they were originally.

The Bournedale Lodge was comprised of ten units originally, to include two cottages.  One of the cottages was later moved and used as a restaurant and was called Road Isle.  Today the building is still the sight of a restaurant that keeps with old cape cod traditions.  Barlow’s Clam Shack is a family run business that serves classic Cape dishes like clam rolls, fish and chips and old fashioned ice cream soda .  These are the same value that had started the Road Isle restaurant in 1950, and continues today with those same traditions.

Ester Marchand managed the motel seasonally until the 1980’s.  In November of 1999, the entire property was bought by Ms. Sherry Flynn and is currently owned and operated year round under the name of The Bournedale Village Inn and Barlow’s Clam Shack and gift shop.   Many renovations have been done over the years to ensure a comfortable stay for their guests and patrons.   As the original owners had managed the business as a family run tradition this is still in place today, “a true family run business”.
